We’re excitedly preparing for upcoming Live Unchained events (!) – both online and live. For now, check out what we’ve done so far…

Live Events

We hosted a film screening and discussion of Mya B.’s film, Silence: In Search of Black Female Sexuality in America, at the University of Maryland, College Park in conjunction with the University’s Nyumburu Cultural Center, SOUL (student organization) and Washington, D.C.’s Institute for Policy Studies.

Online Events

Potluck Poem
We hosted a Potluck Poem on the theme of freedom on our blog. Participants contributed a line to the poem by adding a comment to our blog post. We were honored to include the ideas of all of our participants, including cultural critic, Farai Chideya, and filmmaker, Pete Chatmon. Spoken word artist Tiffany Okafor titled the poem, “A Taste of Freedom, A Taste of Love” and recorded the poem, which you see below. Maria Shriver tweeted that our collective poem was “powerful.”

#YoureUnchainedWhen Design Collaboration
As a “media muse” project, we invited Live Unchained followers to define freedom for themselves by hosting a 24-hour tweet-up in which, followers used the hashtag #YoureUnchainedWhen or replied to our blog to share their thoughts. Graphic designers and illustrators use the tweets as inspirations to create design posters. Our creative team selected their favorite designs and we compiled them into a digital book download, which you can view below. Contributing designers included Afua Richardson, Lance Tooks, Sean Mack and Kendall Patterson among many other talented artists. We were inspired by insightful tweets from several followers worldwide including noted Kenyan artist, Jim Chu Chu, of Just a Band, Abadeu Madyun of DMV Jams and award winning journalist Ciara Calbert of Everybody is a Journalist.
