KATHRYN BUFORD
Kathryn is currently a Sociology doctoral student at the University of Maryland, College Park. She graduated with honors and departmental distinction from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she majored in Sociology with a minor in African American Studies. She was a McNair scholar at the University of Illinois as well as the University of Chicago.
After completing her honors thesis on Afro-Venezuelan activism, she moved to Venezuela where she taught English and studied the Bolivarian Revolution. She recently visited Madrid, Spain to promote Live Unchained and complete research on black activism in Europe.
In the near future, she hopes to travel to the Motherland and visit her step-father’s family in Kumasi, Ghana.
MIRIAM MOORE
Miriam is currently in a MFA program at Savannah College of Art and Design. She holds a BFA in graphic design from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. As an undergraduate student Miriam became interested in studying semiotic messages in visual communication.
As an SROP (Summer Research Opportunities Project) fellow, Miriam conducted research on the portrayal of African-Americans in American popular culture. This project inspired her to work on other independent studies exploring visual experience in media and graphic design. Miriam has contributed design work for both the University of Illinois Hurricane Katrina Summit and Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration. She continues to work on projects pertaining to race and media, cultural diversity and social change.
Currently she works as a designer at a firm in downtown Chicago, and in addition does freelance work for universities and individuals. She has done design work for many clients, including eBay, Shedd Aquarium, and Harris Bank.
Many of the projects she works on now include marketing materials, master planning books, and art installations in various buildings.
