If a picture could be an anthem, mine would be the one below; Shantell Martin drew it out of me.

In our previous interview with the London-born, Bed-Stuy based artist, “Art is a Meditation,” we discussed Shantell Martin’s mantra, “Do less. Be More.,” and how it influences her art. This time, we did a little more and went a little deeper…

An internationally acclaimed visual artist, Shantell’s work both merges and transcends drawing and animation in the design, fashion and music worlds. Her light projections have been featured in New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the megaclubs of Tokyo and Russia, and on the enormous screens at Shibuya and Harajuku crossings in Tokyo. Having worked with big brands like Coca-Cola and NikeID as well as other established artists like photographer, Nigel Barker, Shantell has hand-drawn on everything from tennis shoes to cars, high-fashion models and more.

A fan of her aesthetic, I was excited to become Shantell’s canvas! Our interview begins with footage of Shantell drawing on me. Next, we discuss Shantell’s current exhibition, “Continuous Line” at Black & White Gallery/Project Space in Brooklyn, New York. Shantell also shares how living in Japan inspired her to define her own identity, advice for artists on trusting themselves and what living unchained means to her. She also plays truth or dare for the first time in her adult life.

Already a shooting star, Shantell’s career continues to blossom. We believe the secret to her success is the humility and commitment to personal growth she shows in this feature.

The best part was having talented friends and Live Unchained colleagues Tamami Wakabayashi, Kameelah Janan Rasheed of Mambu Badu (who took such beautiful photos!) and Jaimee Todd (who recorded video).

Here are some more images from our day…

We chuckled at some sections.

Thought more deeply about others.

Smiled.

Tried to find the characters within characters within images within stories.

I smiled harder.

Liked her kicks.

Appreciated the question on the way out.

My daughter who is 9 months has a skin infection diagnosed as candid. She was prescribed nystatin which I have been applying 4 times a day to the affected areas – back of knee, belly button, neck and nipple. Although the nipple seems to have improved slightly the rest continues to look quite nasty. I have been applying the cream for amonth. How long should I continue to do this before going back to see the doctor? Thanks anxious U.K. mum.
