Ava DuVernay’s work is a gift to the rebels. The independent film director, writer and founder of The African American Film Festival Releasing Movement (AFFRM), has again invested her own savings into her upcoming film, “Middle of Nowhere.” As Ava explains: “[We’re] basically saying, ‘don’t wait for permission; don’t look to this corporate entity to say your film was good enough to put out…We really are doing something that the studio and Hollywood system says can’t be done: Regular people distributing films, regular people deciding the fate of our films. Regular people saying, ‘You know what, maybe Hollywood doesn’t have all the answers as to what we want to see or what we can do.”

Rebel filmmakers who would rather spend their inheritance to fund movies outside of the mainstream instead of compromise their vision and anyone who understands (as explained in Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow) that there is nothing natural nor inevitable about the overwhelming incarceration of black men and women in the United States, will appreciate this cinematic pearl.

“Middle of Nowhere” tells the story of Ruby (played by lead actress Emayatzy Corinealdi), a woman who leaves medical school to support her husband’s defense when he (Omari Hardwick) is sentenced to 8 years in prison. Tension increases for Ruby when she takes an interest in another man (David Oyelowo) and learns a lot about herself, love and sacrifice in the process.

Stay tuned next week to learn about Ava and Emayatzy’s creative process and vision for “Middle of Nowhere” in our full-length interview. For now, view the interview video excerpts below to see how we reflected as Ava and Emayatzy shared what living unchained personally means to them and why. Then we laughed uncontrollably over a game of “Truth or Dare” that tapped into Ava’s past as an MC and had Emayatzy, Live Unchained intern Kheprisa Burrell and myself, collectively creating a poem inspired by the film. Lastly, Ava explains why it is EXTREMELY important to support films within the first two days of release.

  • AWESOME post The gift ideas in the article are cool, and I can see
a lot of brain storming was performed. It was great and think I found a
winner. My boy is difficult to buy for because his style is
a little eclectic, but there are one or two items here that that he’ll really be grateful for.
So great work!. This listing was incredibly helpful as my boy way to much of a collector.
By the way it would definitely be great if a 2014 april version of this story could be drafted.
    I’d really like that.

  • We have been where we have been as a result of our own mental attitude.
Without a doubt we will definately remain where we are right up until all of us
embrace carrying out circumstances another way considering that
should all of us persist engaging in things much
the same way, we will essentially get unprogressive

  • Heya! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any issues with hackers?
My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing several weeks of hard work due to no data backup.

Do you have any solutions to stop hackers?
